Data Collection Mission Volunteers
We are looking for volunteers around the upper River Rede (between Byrness and Rochester) and the Ouseburn (Woolsington to Jesmond Dene) to take part in a short-term data collection ‘mission’.

As part of a national project, continuous water quality monitoring sondes are being used to create a model to predict phosphate (one of the nutrients which harm our rivers). We want to build a data set of spot measurements alongside these sondes with the help of citizen scientists.
You will receive training to safely use kits which provide everything needed to measure temperature, conductivity, turbidity and phosphate.

We are ideally looking for volunteers who can commit to taking samples between July and October 2025. You could either sample intensively for a short period of time (e.g., daily for one month) or less frequently over a longer period (e.g., twice a week for 3 months). Missing a week or two due to other commitments is not an issue. At the conclusion of the project, there is the option to continue monitoring, on a less frequent basis, at these or other sites in the Tyne catchment to support the work of Tyne Rivers Trust.
If you are interested in this opportunity, please contact Maddy Fowler at m.fowler@tyneriverstrust.org. Online training will be held on Thursdays throughout July, so please let me know which Thursday in July you would like to join when you get in touch.
