Fixed Point – Changing World is a citizen science photography project creating a community-powered visual record of change across the Tyne catchment.
A network of 18 fixed-point photography posts has been installed at key locations across the catchment. Each post gives people the opportunity to photograph the landscape from exactly the same position, helping us build a record of how our rivers and surrounding environment change over time.
By capturing photographs from the same locations regularly, we can see seasonal variations, natural processes and the impact of practical river restoration work taking place across the catchment.
Over time, these individual photographs will come together to tell a much bigger story about our changing rivers and landscapes.

We’ve created an interactive StoryMap showing the location of each of the 18 photography posts, along with information about each site, why it is important and some of the changes we hope to see.
You can also explore photographs already submitted by visitors and see how individual locations are changing over time.

Get involved
Anyone can contribute to the project. If you’re visiting one of our Fixed Point Photography locations:
- Find a post using the interactive StoryMap.
- Take your photograph from the fixed position.
- Scan the QR code on the post to open the survey.
- Complete the short survey, including the post number, and upload your photograph.
- Come back to the StoryMap gallery to see your image alongside photographs submitted by other people.
Every photograph helps us build a richer picture of how the Tyne catchment is changing.
Together, we’re creating a community-powered record of our rivers, one photograph at a time.
