Partnerships, Passion, and the Future: Sophia Stovall’s First Month

It’s been an energising and eye-opening first month as CEO of Tyne Rivers Trust. I’ve had the privilege of meeting with a wide range of partners, supporters, and colleagues across the region — from the Environment Agency, Tyne Tunnels, local authorities, affiliated partners, collaborators across the rivers movement and fellow environmental organisations.

What has struck me most during this first month is the dedication, passion, and perseverance of those working across the river movement — and particularly the commitment of the Tyne Rivers Trust team. Their belief in what we do, and their determination to make a difference despite the challenges, is both humbling and inspiring. It’s clear that we are part of a wider community of people who care deeply about the health and future of our rivers and catchments.

I’ve also joined several key forums that shape our regional context, including my first Tyne Catchment Partnership meeting (which we proudly host and convene with and for our partners), the North East Chamber of Commerce, and Visit Northumberland’s Visitor Economy Board. These meetings have provided valuable insights into how the Trust’s work connects with wider economic, environmental, and community priorities, and how we can amplify our impact through collaboration.

What’s clear is that the context in which we operate is both complex, and full of possibility. The environmental sector in the North East faces significant challenges — from climate change, biodiversity loss, and water quality issues to reduced public funding and the increasing urgency of adaptation — yet there is a strong and growing appetite for partnership, innovation, and local leadership.

Opportunities exist to harness private investment in natural capital, to strengthen links between river health and regional prosperity, and to raise the profile of Tyne Rivers Trust as a trusted and convening voice for the Tyne and its catchment. This first month has reinforced my belief that the Trust is uniquely placed to lead and inspire collective action, shaping a shared vision for a healthy, resilient river that supports wildlife, communities, and sustainable growth across the region.

I am looking forward to the months ahead — progressing the many conversations and plans that have begun, deepening our partnerships, and continuing my own exploration of the Tyne, its people, and the opportunities that lie ahead.

It is an exciting time for the Trust, and I feel privileged to be part of shaping its next chapter alongside such committed colleagues and collaborators.
