Making a Difference on Our Riverbanks

🍂 November Volunteer Round-up

What an incredible November it’s been! Our dedicated volunteers braved the autumn weather, contributing a fantastic 226 hours to conservation efforts across the catchment. Their commitment has been invaluable in improving our river systems and local habitats.

November was packed with diverse practical tasks including:

Willow Work at Byrness Our team was busy cutting back willow near Byrness. This necessary management will help control the plants’ growth and allowed us to harvest local willow pegs, which will be vital for planting along riverbanks this winter to help stabilize the banks.

Wetland Restoration The challenging but rewarding wetland restoration project at Shotley Grove was completed! Volunteers worked hard to remove years of built-up sediment, ensuring the wetland can function effectively as a clean, vital habitat.

It’s not just the volunteers who do the work. Here’s our volunteer co-ordinator, Jenny, getting stuck in…literally!

Tree Care near Otterburn We visited various sites near Otterburn to conduct essential tree maintenance. The focus was on ensuring that trees planted last year are still well-protected and thriving.

To Celebrate National Tree Week we started our winter tree planting! Volunteers planted a magnificent 300 trees as part of a new hedgerow on a farm near Otterburn, boosting biodiversity and creating new wildlife corridors.

In addition our volunteers continued their critical citizen science efforts:

SmartRivers Sessions Teams took part in two SmartRivers sessions, meticulously identifying riverfly species. The presence and diversity of these tiny creatures are key indicators used to assess and monitor the overall water quality of our local rivers.

A huge thank you to everyone who gave their time and effort this month. Your hard work has made a tangible, positive impact on our natural environment!
