Carbon and Nature Marketplace Launched
We have joined a North East initiative to generate investment for our project to reduce pollution in the River Tyne.

We are inviting businesses to invest in our South Tyne sediment project as part of the Carbon and Nature Marketplace initiative. The project aims to reduce fine sediment pollution, which damages wildlife such as the iconic Atlantic salmon and increases operational costs for businesses that rely on the river for navigation or water abstraction. This is because fine sediments accumulate in our estuary, so must be regularly dredged to maintain shipping lanes. They also clog infrastructure used to abstract water from the river, increasing maintenance costs.
The Carbon and Nature Marketplace initiative is led by the North East Combined Authority and was launched by North East Mayor Kim McGuinness, to bring together public and private organisations, charities and community groups.
Dr Jack Bloomer, chief scientist and technical director at Tyne Rivers Trust said: “Our project demonstrates the clear link between the importance of clean and healthy rivers and profitable business. Fine sediment pollution is hugely damaging to the iconic species of the Tyne, as well as the businesses that rely on our river. By addressing this pollution at source, we will simultaneously be cleaning up our rivers, protecting our wildlife, reducing flooding and safeguarding the economy of the North East.”
“As well as reducing contamination of the river, this project will have multiple benefits including riverbank restoration, woodland and wetland creation, ditch blocking and reconnecting the river to its natural course.”
Developed with the Net Zero North East England partnership, the marketplace is an online platform that allows businesses to buy carbon credits or back environmental initiatives across the region. It was supported by the Environment Agency’s Local Investment in Natural Capital (LINC) programme and aims to turn climate ambition into tangible, local action by connecting business investment with real-world environmental impact.
