Tyne Rivers Trust > Support Us > Adopt a Stream

My Tyne – Adopt a Stream is a new project that engages communities with their streams and rivers through monitoring river health and taking action to conserve and improve them.  Community groups, businesses, schools and individuals can adopt a section of stream, and we provide information, training and equipment so the group or individual can care for their stretch.

Key focus areas are:

·         Water quality monitoring

·         Wildlife recording

·         Invasive species recording and removal

·         Flooding reporting

·         Enjoyment issues such as littering

We will also help groups to resolve issues and improve their adopted stretch of river.  Recording of issues and monitoring results will be easily uploadable via our My Tyne app.

We have initial funding to get the project started and we are applying for more funding to roll out the project across the Tyne catchment area.

How to get involved –

Start monitoring your local stretch of river and start recording what you find and tell us about problems!  We have a handy app  for this.  Visit www.mytyne.rocks for more information or download the app and get started!

If you would like to keep an eye on water chemistry you will need to supply you with some kit and a bit of training.  Please contact us at mytyne@tyneriverstrust.org and we will arrange a training session.

You can also support the project by helping us to purchase tools and monitoring equipment, provide training, or generally help with the project costs.  Please see the sponsorship section below.

Alternatively you could join our regular volunteer activities undertaking a variety of practical works across the catchment from tree planting to invasive species monitoring and removal.  If you are interested please see our volunteering page.

Businesses can support Adopt a Stream in a number of ways:

·         Adopting a section of stream near your workplace and using your staff to monitor and improve it

·         Regularly contributing funds or paying for tools or activities (see the Sponsor a Stream section below)

·         Help fund the general running costs of the project by making a one off or regular donation Donate

·         Volunteer with us as a team building event or on a local task. Please contact mytyne@tyneriverstrust.org

We actively acknowledge business support through press releases and on social media.

We always need tools and monitoring equipment – can you help?  We have a wishlist of items from water quality monitoring kits for a group (£100 a year), to sponsoring an education day in a school (£300 a day), to helping fund a vehicle for volunteers (£1000 a year).  Please see below for the full list of options.

All sponsors will be acknowledged on our website and mentioned on our Facebook page.

If your sponsorship reaches certain levels then you will become a Burn sponsor or a Project sponsor and will receive the following:

Sponsor a Burn £6,000 (£2,000 per year for 3 years; includes a free group activity organised by our volunteer coordinator and acknowledgement in social media and press releases)

Sponsor the Adopt a Stream project £15,000 (£5,000 per year for 3 years; includes your logo on our vehicle, a free group activity organised by our volunteer coordinator and acknowledgement in social media and press releases)
