BREWERY RE-LAUNCHES SOCIALLY CONSCIOUS BEER WITH BALSAM BASHING SESSION
Tyne Bank Brewery celebrated the re-launch of its charity beer with a morning’s balsam bashing on the Ouseburn, led by Tyne Rivers Trust.
Last year, the independent brewery and tap room partnered with Tyne Rivers Trust, the only environmental charity dedicated to looking after the River Tyne to create the aptly named, Tyne Riverlution beer.
The first run of the American-style ale sold out just as the pandemic hit but a new batch has now been brewed and labelled ready to be enjoyed by drinkers at the venue. For every bottle sold, Tyne Bank Brewery will donate 10p to Tyne Rivers Trust to continue its work to improve water quality, reduce pollution and improve habitat in the River Tyne.
To celebrate its relaunch, a group of volunteers made up of staff and regulars from the brewery have spent the morning removing Himalayan balsam from the Ouseburn. Himalayan Balsam is a non-native plant that can erode the riverbank and hinder flow during heavy rainfall, pulling it out is known as balsam bashing and is a great way to improve the river.
Julia Austin, founder of Tyne Bank Brewery, said: “It’s been a challenging year for the brewing industry but it’s important to look after your assets and we definitely see the River Tyne as a huge asset. As well as an iconic landmark for the region, it’s an important source of water for brewing our beer so it’s important that we do all we can to look after it.
Julia adds: “This morning was a fun way of celebrating that the beer is now back on sale.”
Ceri Gibson, Chief Executive Officer of Tyne Rivers Trust says: “It is partnerships like this that allow us to continue our work to improve the health of the Tyne rivers. We see the creation of Tyne Riverlution as a fantastic partnership between two organisations that both have the river at the heart of their business.”
Tyne Rivers Trust is the only environmental charity dedicated to looking after the River Tyne. It focuses on improving the Tyne rivers through education, tackling pollution and practical conservation work.
